BMW Museum takes first place with silver

New BMW Museum presents magnificent views
|
For over thirty years the BMW Museum and the group headquarters have formed "Four Cylinders", the striking architectonic landmark in the northern part of Munich. Even though the architecture of the prestigious exhibition building still looks modern, the passing of time leaves its marks and the "museum dish" had to be comprehensively renovated. Once the work had been concluded the building complex radiated brilliantly as though in competition with the sun.
Since April 2004 the renovation phase has been used as an opportunity to thoroughly renew the museum conceptionally and to spatially extend it. Since the opening of the white and blue exhibition building in 1973, not only has the company developed into a global player with a wide range of vehicles, the expectations of the museum's visitors have changed too. The "New BMW Museum" now addresses these requirements.
The exhibition area has been increased from 1000 to about 4000 square metres. Here, Professor Karl Schwanzer's architectural vision of the alleys and spaces in the converted interior has been consistently maintained. The listed building complex on the Petuelring however had to remain largely unchanged externally. The consultants in charge of the construction work wanted an exterior coating with a brilliant metallic effect, which at the same time corresponded with the colours of silver and blue. This could be realised with the use of Metallocryl Exterior, because the material permitted fascinating, versatile ideas in design.
The Dresden painters, Litterer, first of all blasted off the old paint layers, before repairing the concrete. The craftmen's skill was in demand in replicating the panel formwork of the site-mixed concrete. With reference to the professional coating structure for Metallocryl Exterior the Caparol expert, Thomas Hummert, points out that the intermediate coat with the universal facade paint, Amphibolin, must always be matched in colour to the following Metallocryl shade. Then the decorative coating is applied twice.
To prevent lapping, four groups of three painters worked using roller application. "With effect coatings it is almost inevitable that working traces will still be visible. This is often wanted, because it emphasises its material character," adds Hummert.
